1:1 coaching for expats in Amsterdam

Living abroad is a dream but it also has a huge impact on your personal life.

You have to adapt to another culture, your relationships may suffer, you need to create a whole new social life, you struggle feeling at home, and most of all: you always need to rely on yourself, also in times of turbulence.

Expat life can make your personal life feel wobbly. And having to deal with all of this - on top of your career - can affect your performance, confidence and peace of mind.

How would it feel if you had a strong inner home, so you can feel as steady in your personal life as you do in your career
, no matter where you go?

The struggles of an expat

As a former diplomat and avid traveller, I know what it's like to keep moving around and getting used to a new place, in a new country, with new people. You learn to be independent, but sometimes you miss your trusted safety net when things don't go so well.

These things don't need to be big - you deal with the same issues as your peers, but because you're on your own, they can hit harder. You could face important life decisions about your career or starting a family, feel not entirely happy in your life as it is, or find it difficult to really show your true self in the workspace.

And sometimes the issues are a bit bigger. You realise you can't seem to shake certain patterns off, no matter how often you move.

You could struggle with authority at work, recurring patterns in relationships, or a lack of self-confidence - whatever it is, being abroad doesn't make it easier.

Your family & friends are supportive but also don't really understand what it's like to live abroad, so it still feels like you're on your own.

Why would you need a life coach as an expat?

As an expat you will recognise:

  • feeling overwhelmed with so much change at once

  • uncertain about what career / life moves you need to make next

  • the load you can sometimes feel knowing you always need to rely on yourself, without having your inner circle by your side

  • feeling lonely as you need to build a whole new social life

  • feeling uprooted or torn between two lives

  • small cultural annoyances that can trigger a lot of frustration (and more)

  • being in a constant limbo, you know expat life isn't forever but going home isn't getting that spark in your eyes either

All these things can trigger a lot internally, like difficult emotions, unhelpful thoughts or patterns you know aren't good for you in the long term. And this in turn can affect your performance at work or your well-being in general.

With a life coach by your side, you can prevent this. As a life coach for expats, I work from the inside out, meaning that I help you make sense of what's going on inside of you & get to know yourself on a deeper level.

As a result you will feel much steadier within, like you've created an inner home - and this will help you ride the waves of expat life in a much gentler way.

And what I do as a coach for expats?

I'm not an expat coach holding your hand as you look for new friends or juggle with bureaucracy & paperwork. You're capable enough to deal with that!

Instead, I do the things general life coaches do: help you find your own answers. Provide personal support. Get to know yourself on a deep level, so you can bring those insights with you on future journeys. And I have to warn you: we go pretty deep! Because I believe you can't make long lasting changes if you don't work at the fundamental level of the issue.

The main advantage of working with me, is that I know exactly what you're going through. I lived abroad for over 7 years and dealt with the same struggles. I'm one of the few certified coaches in Amsterdam that works with expats and has also lived abroad herself. That means that you don't need to waste precious coaching time explaining what expat life is like - we can go straight to the core of the matter.

This is what life coaching for expats can mean for you:

  • not doing it alone (for once), but finding recognition and guidance through regular coaching sessions by someone who's been in your shoes

  • learning what's behind recurring patterns in work, life and relationships, so you can finally change them

  • identifying what it is what you really want - and need - so you can work on that, whatever your circumstances

  • being at home within yourself, so that you feel confident, calm & connected wherever you go

Coaching in Amsterdam

I offer 1:1 in person coaching sessions at my practice on the Van Eeghenstraat, next to the beautiful Vondelpark.

I also work online, so there is a possibility of having some (or all) sessions online as well.

Hi, I'm Amanda Maxime

And I'm a life coach for high-achieving expats. As a former diplomat & travel enthusiast with 7+ years abroad, I know first-hand what it's like to build a whole new life in a different country. I also struggled with the typical expat challenges and the effects they had on my relationships, happiness at work, personal goals and steadiness within. Everything changed when I learned to dig deeper and came understand the patterns at play. Now I feel much more confident riding the waves of (expat) life.

Currently based in the Netherlands again, I've coached over 50 globetrotters and helped them to feel as steady in their personal life as they do in their career.

I'm certified by the Dutch Order of Professional Coaches (NOBCO) and work with a wide range of methods & tools.

Good to know: I exclusively work with expats, and adding to that my personal experience abroad, I'm very familiar with the challenges that come with expat life. You don't need to explain your context to me, allowing us to go to the core of the issue straight away.

When you work with Amanda you are getting a truly personalised experience. Amanda took time to get to know me, and who was 'driving the bus' in my daily life of fear-based decision making and we worked with those 'characters' to diffuse their power. The result was feeling more in my body and less in my mind, and more empowered to come from my authentic self, a place of trust, hope and possibilities. It has been such a positive and personal experience. Amanda is the very best kind of coach and teacher, who works with your needs, priorities and preferences, adapting her approach in response to the evolving outcomes. Thank you so much!"

What can you expect of expat coaching?

Whatever it is you want to work on: because I lived abroad myself many times, I know how expat life can be. Sometimes all you need is a safe harbour where you can dock. Where you can be your whole self, relax by feeling understood, and be provided with tools to continue your journey. My coaching sessions can be that safe harbour for you.

Coaching can help you to understand the beliefs, thoughts and behaviour that have held you back, and make positive changes towards your goals. I provide a safe space, where you can openly share and show your vulnerable side - all my coachees praised my non-judgmental approach and felt that really, all was welcome.

As a coach I work 1-on-1 with you to see what lies behind your coaching question and how we can go to to the desired result. I believe all the answers are already within you - but that you just need some tools to discover them. Let me provide you with the tools.

PEOPLE ARE TALKING...

To be honest I was very hesitant at first to get a coach as I thought I should be able to figure things out on my own and I didn`t want to make it into a big deal. However, the coaching sessions with Amanda actually, made things a lot more clear and simple to me. I am no longer semi-avoiding/ suppressing the topic and feel a lot more confident in my choices.

"I always thought I could solve things on my own, but this turned out not to be quite the case. I have experienced the coaching as very pleasant. I immediately felt heard and understood, and this allowed me to open up completely.”

I was a little lost before I started my coaching sessions and felt I needed external support to get me back on track. After the first session with Amanda I noticed a positive change. Amanda was able to listen and give specific advice how to act and think differently in a situation and gave reason to how I was feeling. Our three sessions felt like good, natural conversations with a friend. I'd certainly recommend Amanda to anyone who is thinking about getting some coaching!

Intro call

Practicalities

What happens in the discovery call?

This is a 45-minute call in which I'm all ears for you & your situation. All the globetrotters who went before you found this free call already so valuable as it gave them new insights. I'll help you understand your issue at a deeper level, give you some practical tips and share more about how I work.

And in coaching?

In a coaching session I'll help you find new answers within yourself. Practically that means we'll do lots of exercises - from systemic work, NLP, Voice Dialogue and more - so we can move beyond your cognitive reasoning. We will have defined a coaching question for you in the first session, which will be our compass throughout our 3-4 months together.

When & where do the sessions take place?

The sessions usually take place on Wednesdays or Thursdays, although I'm flexible. Each session lasts for an hour and takes place on Van Eeghenlaan 27, Amsterdam (or online, if you wish).

Are you a certified coach?

Yes! I'm a qualified coach with the Dutch Order of Professional Coaches (NOBCO), since completing an intensive course in 2021. I also recently completed a course at senior practitioner's level (both at an accredited institution).

Can my employer pay for coaching?
Yes they can. Usually there is room for coaching within the learning & development budget. If you are interested in this option, let me know in the discovery call.

Amanda Maxime was a great help to me as a coach. She is wonderful at navigating difficult emotional topics and asked the kind of questions that gave me a better insight into who I am and where I want to be.

I now feel better in touch with my feelings and understand where they come from, rather than being stuck in my mind most of the time.

I could clearly feel Amanda's passion about coaching and personal development from the energy during our sessions.

Highly recommend Amanda as a coach to anyone who's going through some big changes or thinking about it."
